the four atonements

"The Third Sign
And God said,
Return to the Source through sin's Temptation.
Under the Watchful eye of the demon, wander alone in the formless Chaos.
Only then will the Four Atonements be in alignment."

After Joseph's murder, is time for the third sign - so the end of the 21 Sacraments ritual is closer. This is the point where the game starts, so we can witness those deaths through Henry's eyes, and interact with the next victims before they're killed.

Temptation: Cynthia Velasquez (16/21)

Cynthia is killed in the South Ashfield subway (in the game, this means the end of the Subway world). Henry meets her once he enters for first time the weird hole that suddenly appears in his bathroom; she seems to think she's having a dream, though she says this is a really horrible one, not like the ones she usually has. Henry, trying to find a way to escape his room, decides to search for the exit of the subway station and Cynthia says she'll go with him, though they get apart quite quickly. And since the moment she's alone again, Cynthia begins to feel like if someone is following her, and Henry must find her to save her and leave the subway station together. However, Cynthia's life will end no matter what we do: he's been chosen as the 16th sacrifice, murder that has been themed as Temptation, and Henry can't do nothing to avoid that. Cynthia is brutally killed, stabbed multiple times with a knife, by Walter.

As for why Walter did choose Cynthia, we could say Cynthia is an attractive woman, sexually overt and of course a temptation to men (we could even say a whore, actually we don't know if she is or not, but she could be). I guess she also represents to Walter all the girls who were mean to him when he was younger... Besides, Walter did know Cynthia from some years ago, as we can read in this page (translation of information also provided through the official SH4 Website). Instead of writing a little summary myself, I suggest you to go and read it - it's a quite curious story...

Source: Jasper Gein (17/21)

Henry meets Jasper near the beginning of the Forest World. We can see quickly that he knows something about the Wish House and the cult as well; he also mentions Walter for first time, but not by his name - talking about him as "that nosy guy" that has been there a few moments before Henry.

Jasper looks much younger than he actually is: he's around 30, and one could say he looks like if he was 23 or something like that. He's a bit weird person if you ask me... he sounds more like babbling than talking, like if he was always scared of something or someone; partly because he is obviously a nervous person, and possibly also because of the experience he had with Walter many years ago (again, this is the information source). Bobby, Sein and Jasper were Walter's classmates back in high school (or college, I'm not sure) and one day a strange incident happened involving them all. According to this info, Walter showed them the Devil - be it the Devil himself, I mean Samael, or any other kind of devilish sign, using Valtiel's power. The document says Sein and Bobby were missing for a while after that incident, while Jasper managed to run away and escape the devil's (that is, Walter's) power and influence. Bobby and Sein would be later the 2nd and 3rd Walter's victims, respectively, while Jasper ended being the 17th.

As Jasper seems to be really, really interested in the Mother Stone that is deeply related to the origins of the Silent Hill cult, I guess that's why his murder is themed as Source. His death is quite shocking: once Henry manages to enter the Wish House at last, Jasper follows him and begins wandering around, until he enters one of the rooms and suddenly Henry starts to hear him screaming, to quickly enter the room and found that Jasper i's being burned alive...

NOTE: There's something I don't get at all in this story: if Jasper knew Walter already and remembers what he did, why he doesn't seem to be scared at all by Walter's presence in the woods - on the contrary, he seems to be interested in what the "nosy guy" says and/or does? I mean, Jasper ran away that day, he was scared - he saw what Walter did. He should be scared now, and he acts like if he doesn't care. It doesn't make sense at all for me... am I missing something? :/

Watchfulness: Andrew DeSalvo (18/21)

Andrew is, from all these characters, the one we less interact with. Once Henry is in the prison world, he quickly finds Andrew locked up in a prison cell, saying that Walter's gonna kill him, and asking for help to come out from that cell. We spend most of our time in that world trying to help him out while we try to access the prison basement as well, and once he's out, we can finally know thanks to him that the little mysterious kid we've met before was actually Walter Sullivan, and that he knows him because he worked some time at the Wish House watching the kids. But this is the most important thing we can get from Andrew, actually... nothing else.

Andrew seems to be a quite inoffensive guy, but actually he was (he is) quite a cruel person. He was always drunk and he used to abuse the kids, regardless they followed the rules or not. Walter chooses him for the 18th sacrifice, themed Watchfulness, for obvious reasons; and he chooses him and not any other of the watchmen they had at the Wish House simply as a matter of revenge on how badly he had always treated the children.

Andrew's death is the most... peaceful we could say, as he's drowned in a pool. However, and I find this detail quite curious, his ghost, that you'll find the second time you visit the Water Prison world, is one of the thoughest, if not the thoughest. He actually killed me twice while I was trying to beat him :/

Chaos: Richard Braintree (19/21)

It isn't weird at all that Walter did choose Richard as the sacrifice for the murder themed Chaos. Richard is moody, gets easily angry and shouts a lot; he's a really volatile man and personally I wouldn't bet he's sane at all. None of all the South Ashfield tenants seem to like him, and actually he's known for his bad temper, for being a person really hard to treat with and for the fact he's always carrying a revolver... besides of what he did to Mike from Room 301 (story you can read also here). Besides, Richard was specially mean to little Walter when he visited South Ashfield Heights trying to get to see his mom (that is, getting into Room 302); so, besides the fact that to a young Walter Richard was obviously the incarnation of chaos itself, Walter did choose him also to get a little revenge on how Richard always treated him, preventing him from meeting his mother.

Richard's death is for me the most horrible from the ones you can witness in the game, as he dies strapped in an electric chair - something that really isn't a pleasure to see, I can tell you.
